In a rear-end collision, the body is forced suddenly forward while the head goes backward in relation to the body. This hyperextension of the neck causes the head to then snap forward, which creates the classic "whiplash" injury. Soft tissues (ligaments, muscles, etc.) are injured while vertebrae are generally displaced from their proper positions. Neck pain, headaches, arm pain and weakness, mid-back pain, low back pain and other symptoms often develop, sometimes immediately and sometimes somewhat delayed.

Auto accidents are a common cause of injury. Research has shown that soft tissue injury can occur with an impact speed of as little as 5 miles per hour. These injuries are often overlooked or downplayed, but can have lasting negative effects on your health. If there is any bleeding, possibility of broken bones or loss of consciousness, seek medical treatment immediately. Once any immediate crises have been addressed, get checked by a chiropractor as soon as possible to assist with proper healing and maintain your health and well-being.
